What is really keeping you from going to therapy? part i

"Keep your shadows in front of you, they can only take you down from behind."
Brené Brown, in a recent interview, attributed this quote to Carl Jung, it's unclear whether or not he actually said this, but, nonetheless, the concept is clearly inspired by his work.
It struck me when I heard this that all of the friends and acquaintances, young professionals becoming established in their careers, many of them, who I have heard reference the price of therapy as their main barrier to entry.  Either the price or the fear of "not wanting to deal with it", it being whatever horrors they believe are locked inside. Rarely have I heard anyone say that they don't believe therapy would be effective for them, it's typically one of these first two reasons; price and fear.
First the idea of price: to me, it seems a small price to pay to invest in the healing of yourself that can pay dividends for the rest of your life.  It would be one thing if these were individuals that were truly struggling to make ends meet, but like I mentioned earlier, these are young professionals that have enough money to make it to expensive weekend festivals several times a year, go on international trips, and ball out at nice restaurants frequently.  If you have money for The Now in that way, then price really can't be the issue.  If you have money for an expensive meal then it seems you would have money for the possibility of improving your quality of life immeasurably and opening yourself up to a broader spectrum of the human experience than you've ever known.  So if price isn't really the issue than the real issue must be the second: fear.
More on that tomorrow.
